Chalsea joined our team as our first Nurse Advocate at Advocating Opportunity. Chalsea is a master’s prepared nurse with completion of the clinical nurse leader (CNL) program at the University of Toledo in 2021. She conducted a nursing research publication at the University of Toledo, Assessing Healthcare Provider Knowledge on Human Trafficking (2021). Chalsea has intensive critical care nursing experience in pediatrics with cross-training in neonatal care. She previously worked with AO) supporting trafficked persons from crisis management to addressing tertiary needs.

The Nurse Advocate works with healthcare providers in the community and meets with clients for individual consultation in achieving their health goals. Chalsea’s goals for the Nurse Advocate role include establishing trusted patient-provider relationships and creating a health culture where clients are comfortable using all the resources available. As human trafficking is a growing public health issue, Chalsea seeks to better integrate health services in the Toledo community for clients navigating healthcare systems. Utilizing ‘Dorothy Orem’s Theory of Self-Care’ we want clients to feel they are educated and confident in taking the lead in their own lifelong and family health goals.

“Most people, children or adults, with trafficking experiences are often seen in the healthcare setting. Their experiences might be historical or current, but too often this is the sole focus of their visit. It is time that we as a community start addressing their health needs directly, using the resources we have with them in health settings, without focusing on their victimization or identifying them as having experienced trafficking.” - Chalsea
